IQ Cath Features and benefits

Our IQ-CATH range of intermittent catheters has a unique soft, rounded head that sits on top of a highly bendable neck. This combination allows the catheter to pass through most narrowings in the urethra without resistance.

The IQ-CATH range is made from medical-grade PVC (DEHP-free). The coating is hydrophilic and can be activated with water or saline. The IQ43 and 23 range are ready for use immediately. The eyelets on all IQ catheters are rounded and polished inside and out and then coated. The outlet funnel will attach to any conical inlet connector on a standard leg or night bag if required.

Length and size of the catheter

The length specification refers to the effective length (length of the catheter that can be inserted into the body) without the funnel. The size of the catheter refers to its external diameter indicated in French gauge (CH) and millimetres. The catheter funnel is colour-coded to denote the respective size.

Urethral strictures and false pockets

One of the complications associated with intermittent catheters and their use can be the development of urethral strictures and false passages in men.

Men may also have urethral strictures for other reasons and need to self-catheterise to ensure that the stricture is dilated to enable the normal passing of urine. Many of our customers tell us that they find the IQ CATH range easy to insert and with their unique features, pass through a stricture or an enlarged prostate with ease.

Strictures and False Passages explained

The male urethra is 18-20cms in length and a stricture can occur anywhere along that length. The common sites for urethral strictures in men are:

  1. The meatal stricture/meatal stenosis – this occurs at the external opening to the urethra and tends to be more common in circumcised men.
  2. The penile urethra
  3. The bulbar urethra
  4. The membranous urethra
  5. The prostatic urethra
